The Three Monks(三个和尚)

The Three Monks

Once upon a time, there was a temple on a mountain. A little monk lived in the temple.

Every morning, he got water from the river nearby. Every time he could carry two buckets of water with the pole.

And he added water to the bottle on the Buddha’s table, and the willow branches in the bottle grew better and better.

He knocked wooden fish and chanted the Buddhist scriptures in front of the Buddha every day.

He thought it was a free and comfortable place for him to live. How happy the little monk was!

A few days later, a thin monk came to the temple. He was very thirsty. He drank a lot of water.

The little monk told him to carry water. At first the thin monk went to carry water by himself.

But then he thought it was unfair, he should carry water together with the little monk.

So the two monks went to get water together. They could carry only one bucket of water at a time. And to make it fair, each of them must place the bucket in the center of the pole.

Anyway, they had water to drink.

Later, a fat monk came. It’s very hot that day, the fat monk felt extremely thirsty. He told the two monks to get some water for him. But they asked him to get by himself.

No one wanted to carry water anymore, and the three monks had no water to drink.

One night, a rat came out to steal the lamp oil. Unfortunately, the lamp fell down and set the curtains on fire. After a while, the whole temple was in fire.

But there wasn’t any water in the tank. The three monks ran to get water in a hurry. After a long time, they finally put out the fire.

From then on, they took turns to carry water, the tank was full every day.
